Almost's All I Got

Two a.m. and I'm weak again,
three words, and then I press send.
"I miss you", nothing else,
I never learned how to pretend.
Two-fourteen, it says "seen",
and the whole room goes still,
then the dots show up, like they always do,
like they always will.

You almost wrote back, I saw the dots,
they came and went, and then they stopped.
We were good at almost, you and me,
almost brave and almost free.
So I'm still up at two-fourteen,
staring at a silent screen.
You almost said it, I almost knew,
almost's all I ever got from you.

We almost moved to Lisbon, had the map out on the bed,
we almost named a puppy, almost said what should be said.
You almost met my mother, you almost said you'd stay,
we almost made it through December, almost made it to May.

You almost wrote back, I saw the dots,
they came and went, and then they stopped.
We were good at almost, you and me,
almost brave and almost free.
And if you're up at two-fourteen,
with my name lit on your screen,
just say it once, and say it true,
'cause I'm still almost over you.

Don't send me a paragraph, don't tell me what went wrong,
just finish what you started, it's been almost for too long.
Three little dots, that's all it takes to bring me to my knees,
so write the words, or let me go. Please.

You almost wrote back, I saw the dots,
they came and went, and then they stopped.
We were good at almost, you and me,
almost brave and almost free.
So go to sleep at two-fourteen,
I'll turn off this lonely screen,
'cause almost isn't "I love you",
and almost's all I got from you.

Almost...
almost's all I got from you.
