Your Charger Still Lives Here

“Your charger still lives here, plugged in by my bed, a little blue light where you used to lay your head”

Texts After Midnight4:22EnglishSingles

You packed it all in April in your brother's silver car,
the plants, the rug, the mirror, every glow-in-the-dark star.
But you missed the white cord hanging where your lamp used to stand,
with the yellow tape you wrapped around it like a wedding band.

It doesn't even fit my phone, I've got no use for it at all,
but every night I reach to pull it, and I leave it in the wall.

Your charger still lives here, plugged in by my bed,
a little blue light where you used to lay your head.
It isn't charging anything, it just keeps the light on,
like me at two a.m., like I don't know you're gone.
'Cause nobody leaves the thing that keeps them going, do they?
So one night your phone will die, and you'll come back for it, and stay.

On Friday you were out at Lauren's, someone told me after ten,
you asked the kitchen for a charger, and you borrowed one from Ben.
And they sell them at the gas station, seven dollars, maybe eight,
but I tell myself you'll want this one, so I keep it on and wait.

So at 2:14 I texted, "Hey, you left your charger here,
I can drop it off tomorrow," and I watched the dots appear.
And they stopped, and then they started, and I watched them come and go,
"You can keep it, I've got a new one." Yeah... I know.

Your charger still lives here, but you've got a new one now,
and the yellow tape's still holding, like it took a vow.
It isn't charging anything, it just keeps the light on
for you, and you don't need it, yeah, I know you're gone.
Nobody leaves the thing that keeps them going, so what does that make me?
You left a seven-dollar charger... and you left me.

Your charger still lives here...
and so do I.
